Military service in Algeria covers two distinct paths: mandatory national service for every young Algerian, and voluntary recruitment into the training academies of the People's National Army (ANP).
Law n° 14-06 of 9 August 2014 on national service requires every Algerian who turns 19 to complete 12 months of national service, following the census (recensement), medical selection, and call-up stages; failing to report without valid grounds exposes the individual to "insoumis" (draft-dodger) status and legal prosecution. In parallel, the ANP opens recruitment across its twelve corps (officer, non-commissioned officer, enlisted rank) per the Ministry of National Defense's official 2026 orientation guide, subject to conditions on nationality, marital status, age, and education level.
