About this tool

Since 09 July 2026, Algeria applies the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961: certifying public documents for use abroad is now done through a single, simplified procedure – the 'apostille' – instead of the long traditional chain of legalizations.

This checker tells you whether your document needs an apostille, is exempt (France), or still requires the traditional route depending on the destination country and document type, with the steps, competent authority and key notes. The result is indicative; official verification is on apostille.gov.dz.

Certification rules and member-state list

Fixed rules decide whether your document needs the apostille voucher, is exempt, or still requires traditional legalization. The outcome depends on the document's sector and the destination country, exactly as the interactive tool above evaluates it.

The five covered sectors and the competent authority
Document sectorAuthority competent for the apostille
Civil-status documents (birth, marriage, death, family record...)The daïras, administrative circumscriptions and wilaya headquarters (civil-status services).
Judicial documents (judgments, nationality, criminal record, notarial acts...)The public-prosecution services at the 48 courts of justice.
Higher-education diplomas (licence, master's, doctorate, engineer...)The directorate of diplomas and equivalences, or the issuing university.
National-education certificates (baccalaureate, school records...)The National Office for Examinations and Competitions (ONEC), ONEFD, ONEA or INFPE, or the 60 wilaya education directorates (school documents).
Vocational-training certificatesThe 58 wilaya directorates of vocational training, or the directorate of guidance, examinations and certification.

The voucher fee is flat across all sectors: 1,500 DZD per document, paid at tax offices or post offices (duplicate if lost: 600 DZD).

Special cases

  • France — exemption (article 36)

Algerian public documents are exempt from legalization and usable directly in France, under article 36 of the Algeria–France judicial-cooperation protocol. An apostille remains available if the receiving body requires it.

  • Non-covered sector → traditional legalization

This type of document is not among the five sectors covered by the apostille in its first phase, so it remains subject to traditional legalization.

  • Non-member or unlisted country → traditional legalization

The destination country is not among the states for which the apostille convention is in force with Algeria, so traditional legalization is still required (supervising ministry, then Foreign Affairs, then the destination country's mission). Check the current status on apostille.gov.dz.
